The Percussion Technician (PT) plays a key role in the success of the Washington Commanders Drumline by collaborating with the Percussion Instructor and the Music Director. This role is responsible for ensuring the effective operation and performance of the drumline throughout the season. This position involves attending all rehearsals and games, providing instruction on a variety of aspects of drumming, including technique, note learning, ensemble playing, marching, and musicianship. The Percussion Technician will also be expected to orchestrate sectional rehearsals, conduct full rehearsals in the absence of the Percussion Instructor, and offer support to the Percussion Instructor and Music Director to ensure the optimal performance of the drumline.
Key Responsibilities:
- Attend all scheduled rehearsals, performances, and games, ensuring the drumline operates at peak performance.
- Work closely with the Percussion Instructor and Music Director to maintain consistent teaching and rehearsal strategies.
- Provide direct instruction to individual musicians and the entire drumline on drumming technique, note learning, ensemble cohesion, and marching fundamentals.
- Conduct sectional rehearsals to work on specific areas of improvement within the drumline.
- In the absence of the Percussion Instructor, run full rehearsals to ensure continued progress and preparedness for performances.
- Support the Percussion Instructor and Music Director with additional duties as needed, including rehearsal preparation, logistics, and performance coordination.
- Assist in the development of the drumline’s visual aspects, including marching techniques and overall performance aesthetics.
- Provide feedback and guidance to percussionists to foster growth, musicianship, and excellence within the drumline.
- Help maintain percussion equipment, ensuring instruments are in good working condition for rehearsals and performances.
- Maintain a positive, motivating environment to encourage team cohesion and individual development.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in teaching, coaching, or playing in a drumline or percussion ensemble, preferably in a competitive environment.
- Strong knowledge of percussion techniques, marching fundamentals, and ensemble performance.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to provide constructive feedback to musicians of various skill levels.
- Ability to manage rehearsals, providing clear and effective instruction.
- Strong work ethic, punctuality, and reliability.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team, including the Percussion Instructor and Music Director.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and game days as needed.
- Strong organizational skills to assist in rehearsal and performance planning.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with high school, college, or professional drumlines.
- Familiarity with the logistics of marching band performances and competitions.
- Advanced proficiency in percussion instruments, including snare drum, bass drum, tenor drums, cymbals, and mallet percussion.
